Tea De Forte

Located inside the historical Dutch fort Galle, a unique place to experience the characteristics of Ceylon teas.In this way, not only we are able to personally guarantee a selection of the absolute best teas available, but also a deep understanding and knowledge of Ceylon teas, which we can then pass onto our customers. Quality teas are hand picked by our tea experts and regular quality examinations ensure that all products are in compliance with accepted quality standards. Teas are packed in attractive food grade gift and bulk packs.


Tea plant was first brought to Ceylon in 1824 a by a British from China and later in 1839 from Assam and Culcutta , planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya for experimental purpose.

In 1867, a seventeen year old planter called James Taylor marked the birth of the very first tea plantation in the Loolecondera (Pronounced Lul-Ka(n)dura, Kandy. In 1873, the first shipment of Ceylon tea, a consignment of some 23 lb (10 kg), arrived in London.

The major tea growing areas are Kandy and NuwaraEliya in Central Province, Badulla, Bandarawela and Haputale in Uva Province, Galle, Matara and Mulkirigala in Southern Province, and Ratnapura and Kegalle in Sabaragamuwa Province.

Ceylon black tea is one of the country’s specialties due to its unique character. The humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall of the country’s central highlands provide a climate that favors the production of high-quality tea which has a crisp aroma reminiscent of citrus, and is used both unmixed and in blends. It is grown on numerous estates, which vary in altitude and taste.
